The critics of Senate are against the bill that makes it legal to put slot machines near Pennsylvania’s grass tracks on which horses race. They say that the bill would eliminate many of public protections and the taxpayers would have to pay millions for that. Senate Minority Leader Robert J. Mellow, D-Lackawanna wants to discuss the bill once again. The case is, that House leaders and governor Ed Rendell see the bill the main source of financing a plan to lower the taxes for the owners of schools by 20% in every state of the USA. Senate Democrats criticized mainly an addition made to the House bill. The addition was made because lobbyists for Penn National Gaming Inc. asked for it. Because of the addition, a future buyer of the Wyomissing-based company would not have to have a state inspection and would not have to pay for a license $50 million. However, last month, Senate negotiators wanted that any next buyer of a slot license will have to have a state inspection and pay for the license. The House said that the addition should not affect a publicly-managed companies like Penn National, one of parents of Penn National Racetrack in Dauphin County.
